Have you ever dropped a hint, thinking the other person would get it, but they were clueless?

Maybe that’s happened with a significant other, a friend, a colleague — or your team!

In a team setting, dropping hints can cause confusion. It’s a recipe for inefficiency and growing frustration.

And if you feel like there are people on your team who aren’t improving the way you want, could it be that it’s because they’re not getting your hints?

What doesn’t work

Some leaders fall into the trap of "hopeful management." This managing style uses hints, hoping that the worker will “get it” and improve.

Sure, it’s a great way to avoid conflict.

But it’s not a great way to develop your people or your team! If they don’t have clear direction, they’ll flounder.

Just as frustrating are blanket policies, where instead of addressing the problematic worker directly, the leader makes a rule for everyone. This frustrates workers, especially high performers who have already been working effectively.

A better approach

So, what’s the solution? The answer lies in a clear, focused feedback approach.

The Focused Feedback Filter helps you drill down into specific information and precise language to communicate to the individual who needs to change their behavior.

  • Who: Speak directly to the individual, not the group.

  • What: Address the specific behavior, not unrelated issues.

  • How: Clearly outline expectations to guide improvement.

  • When: Set a timeline for follow-up discussions.

The importance of directness

This shift from hinting to helpful communication isn’t just about avoiding frustration—it’s about building clarity and empowerment.

Direct conversations build trust, solve problems, and make life easier for everyone.

Leadership isn’t about hoping for change; it’s about helping others achieve it. By embracing direct communication, you’ll foster a culture of transparency and collaboration. So, skip the hints and blanket policies—your team (and your sanity) will thank you.
